from World Village. Lokua Kanza was born in Bukavu,
in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He is related,
on his father's side to the Mongo people, known
for their polyphonic singing. His mother is from
Rwanda, a country known for its sophisticated
court music. He grew up in Kinshasha where he
was steeped in music from morning till night.
He made his decision to become a singer after
attending a Miriam Makeba concert. His songs are
sung in Lingala, Portuguese and French.

Tony Allen is a self-taught drummer from Lagos
Nigeria, where he began performing in highlife
bands in the 1960's. He's now living in Paris
