A Day Trip to Luverne, Minnesota

Friday, July 17th, 2015    8 am to 5 pm

This little southern Minnesota town has made a name for itself with the many attractions it offers. Luverne has its own restored Civil War cannon at the Herreid Military Museum which has artifacts from several wars. This museum was featured in the Ken Burns’ Second World War documentary shown on PBS.

There’s more: They devote two floors to the Brandenburg Gallery which is full of the world renowned nature photographer’s work. He traveled for National Geographic for three decades, won many awards and had a television documentary on PBS featuring Chased by the Light. He was from Luverne.

Our visit will include a trip to the Blue Mounds State Park to see the Sioux Quartzite cliff line and the stone fence. The bison which are scheduled to come to Mankato’s Minneopa State Park this fall are coming from the herd at Blue Mounds. We will see an audio/visual program about those bison and the park at the Interpretive Center, which was once the home of author Frederick Manfred.

Schedule for the day:

10:30 am: Arrive Blue Mounds State Park
12-12:15 pm: Lunch at Sterling Café (on your own)
1-1:15: Rock County Veterans Memorial Bldg
