Reports directly to the MSSA President. Files monthly activity reports with the MSSA Administrative Assistant/MSSA President. Attends bi-weekly cabinet staff meetings. May be asked by the MSSA Speaker or MSSA Legislative Affairs Chair to give oral or written reports to committee members. The MSSA President shall make job performance evaluations on semester/summer term basis. (The MSSA Legislative Affairs Coordinator may be the same person as the Students United Legislative Affairs Specialsit or someone else.)


The MSSA Legislative Affairs Coordinator position is not salaried nor receives a stipend.

Job Summary:

The MSSA Legislative Affairs Coordinator shall be the liaison between the Minnesota State Legislature, the United States Congress, and the Minnesota State Student Association/Senate. In addition they may be responsible for chairing the Legislative Affairs Committee and executing any action as directed by the committee, or the MSSA President relating to legislative issues. The MSSA Legislative Affairs Coordinator will work with matters concerning local, state and federal governments that impact student and the general campus community.

Specific Goals/Duties:

  • Draft and present the Minnesota State student legislative platform to the MSSA Senate for approval.
  • Monitor status of student legislation before local, state and federal governments.
  • Monitor status of policy activity before the Higher Education Board, coordinate information from Minnesota State, boards and committees with MSSA Academic affairs and Student Services Coordinators.
  • Coordinate various lobbying activities on higher education issues including at least two lobby trips per semester.
  • Organize lobby efforts via email, voice mail or in person.
  • Report to the MSSA Senate the status of student legislation interest.
  • Disseminate legislative information to Minnesota State students.
  • Attend Legislative Affairs committee meetings.
  • Attend MSSA Cabinet meetings, and make two reports to the MSSA Senate per month. MSSA Senate meeting each month
  • Keep weekly journal of all activities/contacts
  • Perform other duties as the President may direct.


Contact all levels of personnel within MSU Mankato, the greater Mankato community, Students United, Minnesota State and any other relevant agencies/offices with regard to given position and duties

Required Hours of Service:

Hold posted regular office hours at MSSA for a minimum of 3 hours per week to be accessible to MSSA staff, Senate and students. Complete all other assigned work each week at Coordinator's convenience.

Skills and Educational Requirements:

This student must demonstrate a good understanding of legislative issues and have a desire to work in government affairs. The student shall also comply with all requirements set forth in the MSSA Constitution and Bylaws and shall submit official GPA to MSSA's administrative assistant at time of hire and at the beginning of each term of employment.
