Attended Federal Lobby trip in Washington, D.C. Met with Dave Minge's staff, Senator Wellstone and Grams staff. Issues discussed: Maintenance Effort, Increasing Pell award, Loan limit, educational IRA'S, House filing 1053, student involvement, independent status. Minnesota is only state that does a dollar for dollar amount taken from your Pell grant. Show up for committee meetings.
Senator Rector-Explain lottery based loans.
Senator Shub-Why is Minnesota the only state that has the dollar for dollar?
Seantor Krois-Explain grant and loan amount.
Senator Bicek-We would like to see more grants and less loans. There is a bill in appropriations that would increase Pell Grant. There is some money there, we would like to see this used for education purposes.
Rhys Gaffer-Is there any more information about the INS fee?
Senator Bicek-Most senators did not even know about this, it is not a high priority.

Senator Short
-Legislative Affairs has set main goal of Get out the Vote. Last year only 8 students voted, that is why politicians don't care about students. We need to assert our power and make something happen. We need to get out the vote, we need 70% of students voting, then they will listen to our vote. We need to get many groups on campus involved.
