May 11: 1,500 Students to Participate in Spring Commencement

Ceremonies at 9 a.m., noon and 3 p.m.

Mankato, Minn. – Approximately 1,500 Minnesota State University, Mankato students will participate in three spring commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 11.

Ceremonies will be at 9 a.m., noon and 3 p.m. in Bresnan Arena of Taylor Center. Students in the colleges of Arts & Humanities and Science, Engineering & Technology will take part in the 9 a.m. ceremony; those in the colleges of Allied Health & Nursing and Education will participate in the noon event; and students in the colleges of Business and Social & Behavioral Sciences will be graduated in the 3 p.m. ceremony.

Two of the candidates will be honored as the first graduates of the inaugural doctoral cohort of Minnesota State Mankato’s new Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) degree program in school psychology. They are Brett W. DeJager of Luverne, Minn., and Julene D. Nolan of North Mankato, Minn. Master’s-degree candidates will graduate with the college of their affiliation.

Music for the three ceremonies will be provided by the Minnesota Valley Brass Quintet (Minnesota State Mankato faculty members Gerard Aloisio, Stewart Ross and Doug Snapp; emeritus faculty member Tom Giles; and alumnus Dave Schultz). Kimm Julian, Minnesota State Mankato associate professor of music, will perform the National Anthem and the closing Minnesota State University, Mankato Hymn.

Whitney Stewart Harris, executive director for diversity and equity for the Minnesota State Colleges & Universities, will greet the candidates. Micki Schaffer, a 1995 and 2010 graduate and president of the Minnesota State Mankato Alumni Association, will welcome new graduates to the association. President Richard Davenport will present diplomas to the new graduates.

Student speakers for the 9 a.m. ceremony will be Soyal Lama Shrestha, Bhaktapur, Nepal, president of the Minnesota State Student Association; Sylvia Vue, St. Paul, Minn., College of Arts & Humanities; and Marchell Magxaka, Oudkshoorn, South Africa, College of Science, Engineering & Technology.

Student speakers for the noon ceremony will be Caitlyn E. Swisher, Estherville, Iowa, and Katie M. Klosterbuer, Ellsworth, Minn., College of Allied Health and Nursing; and Karina M. Beck, Chaska, Minn., College of Education.

Student speakers for the 3 p.m. ceremony will be Anuka Rodrigo, Pita Kotte, Sri Lanka, College of Business, and Andrew M. Wesolowski, Mankato, College of Social & Behavioral Sciences.
