MSU, Mankato Community Service and Service-Learning Photos Sought

A display featuring photos of service and engagement accomplished during 2014-15 is scheduled to celebrate National Volunteer Week 2015.

In anticipation of National Volunteer Week, the Community Engagement Office will host a display in the Centenniel Student Union, featuring photos that illustrate the many ways our campus community has engaged in service to the Mankato and extended community over the past year. Photos of community service, community engagement, and service accomplished through service-learning classes are welcome.

Photos should be of community service, not campus service, and should be of service accomplished between June 1, 2014 and April 6, 2015. Service may be accomplished in an ‘on campus space’ but should benefit the off-campus community.  By sending a photo, you are giving us approval to post it in a display celebrating the service accomplished by MSU, Mankato.  If there is any question about the rights for the photo, it will refer back to the person who submitted the photo. A competition will be held to determine which photos will be included in our application for the President's Community Service Honor Roll.

If you have a photo to be shared, please send it in an electronic version to Karen Anderson, by April 6, 2015.  Please give a 10 word (1 sentence) description including:

  • - the group, class, team or individual in the photo.
  • - the activity – use succinct language (‘prepares meals for’, ‘tutors adults at’, ‘raises funds for’, ‘rallies for’, ‘holds a teach-in for’, ‘lobbies for’, etc.)
  • - the npo or government agency being supported.
  • - the date, including year, of the event.

If you are able, in parenthesis at the end of the sentence, please include the total number of hours accomplished by the group or individual.

So, a description might read, “Karen Anderson builds trails for the National Forest Service at Land Between the Lakes, June 2014 (35 hours) or MSU, Mankato Alternative Spring Break paints rooms for Sophia’s Heart, March 9-13, 2015 (156 hours)

This could serve as a good opportunity to insure that your service hours have been reported. Individuals should visit MavSync to report the service by clicking on their name in the top right corner, then clicking on ‘Involvement’ on the drop down menu, clicking the green ‘Add Involvement Entry’ on the top right side, clicking the event participation option, and finally entering and submitting the service on the form provided.  Unfortunately, all service must be reported individually and not as a group total.   Please type “Service: (Insert Name of Agency here)”  on the line titled,” Agency (if desired organization is not listed above)”.  If the service was arranged by a campus contact on behalf of an agency, please put the name of the person who can verify your service, even if it was not with an agency.  Someone from the Community Engagement Office will follow up with that person to learn who their contact was at the agency, to verify it with them. Please only report service that involves connections to off-campus using the steps outlined above.  Campus service and involvement may be reported using the same involvement link, but please refer back to the campus group in the drop down menu at the top of the form.

Please feel free to share this information with other in our campus community.

Thank you for your service and engagement, and representing MSU, Mankato in the process!
