Many students call Minnesota State University, Mankato home, but there are plenty of reasons for you to visit as well.
If you like theatre, it's the place to be. Their theatre department puts 19 full productions on the stage every year, which is more than any other university in the country. They're kicking off this upcoming season with the Broadway hit "Rent." Some of their students have already been on Broadway.
"It's unlike any academic theatre you've ever seen," says Paul Hustoles, Minnesota State Mankato Theatre and Dance chair. "It's similar to a professional theatre, it's just, I think, better. Why are we better? Because we're more enthusiastic. We tend to be a younger talent pool and so there's a lot of energy. If I could bottle up the energy, the energy crisis would be finished."
There's also lots of energy in the music department. They have 30 different events happening each semester to suit your musical taste.
"We're presenting Twin Cities type entertainment at Mankato prices," Music Events Coordinator Dale Haefner says.
Possibly the biggest time of the year on campus is Vikings training camp, which is happening right now. Every summer the Vikings roll onto campus, set up shop and get ready for the upcoming season.
"It's a great opportunity to get up close and personal with your favorite Vikings football player," says Associate Director of Athletics Paul Allan. "It's unbelievable access that Vikings fans have to the Vikings here in Mankato."
