Honor for MSU, Mankato's Shirley Piepho

Council's "Above and Beyond Award" given to MSU, Mankato's "Ball of Energy."

Recognized as a “ball of energy” overseeing the details in coordinating major events, Shirley Piepho, assistant director of events and meeting services at Minnesota State University, Mankato was presented the Mankato Area Council of Quality “Above and Beyond Award” on Tuesday, July 17.

During a surprise presentation, MACQ president Matt Chmielewski cited Piepho for quality customer service in planning and logistics for campus events.

“Shirley Piepho continues to amaze as she works with MSU departments and external groups to ensure that their workshops, conferences, weddings and other events go off without a hitch,” Chmielewski stated. “Shirley ‘gets it’ and knows that ‘the devil is in the details.’”

Operating within the Centennial Student Union, the scheduling office coordinates such campus-hosted events as the Minnesota Vikings Summer Training Camp – which returns to the university on July 26 – the Mankato Marathon, Thunder of Drums, the Mankato International Festival, regional science fairs, campus and community fairs, and numerous other workshops, conferences and weddings. Across campus, Piepho’s staff coordinates 27,000 activities annually with 21,000 slated in the Centennial Student Union.

“MSU has great facilities which can be used after classroom needs are dealt with,” Chmielewski said, “and, it takes a fireball like Shirley to maximize their use.”

The nonprofit MACQ was established in 1989 to identify and recognize quality initiatives within the greater Mankato community, and its “Above and Beyond” award periodically honors exemplary service in the work place.
