Sept. 4: Author Craig Mullaney to Speak on Campus

Mullaney's book, 'The Unforgiving Minute,' is 'Common Read' this year.

Minnesota State University, Mankato Media Relations Office News Release, July 31, 2012

Mankato, Minn. – Author Craig Mullaney will discuss his book, “The Unforgiving Minute,” to kick off Minnesota State Mankato’s “common read” on Tuesday, September 4, 2012.

Mullaney will speak at 7:30 p.m. in the Centennial Student Union ballroom. The presentation is free and open to students, faculty, staff and the public. A book signing will follow. Attendees need not have read the book to enjoy this presentation.

The event will be streamed live here, and the video recording will be posted online after the event.

All learning community students were asked to read “The Unforgiving Minute” before the start of 2012-’13 classes. First Year Seminar instructors also were invited to use the book in their classes, and Minnesota State Mankato staff members are working with the Blue Earth County and North Mankato Taylor libraries and several other organizations to invite community participation.

The Barnes & Noble bookstore in Minnesota State Mankato’s Centennial Student Union is selling paperback copies of the book for $12, which is 25 percent off the cover price of $16.
As described on the author’s website at, “The Unforgiving Minute” is the extraordinary story of one soldier’s singular education. From a hilarious plebe’s-eye view of the author’s West Point experience to the demanding leadership crucible of Ranger School’s swamps and mountains, to a two-year whirlwind of scintillating debate, pub crawls, and romance at Oxford, Mullaney’s winding path to the battlegrounds of Afghanistan was unique and remarkable.

Despite all his preparation, the hardest questions remained. When the call came to lead his platoon into battle and earn his soldiers’ salutes, would he be ready? Was his education sufficient for the unforgiving minutes he’d face? A fascinating account of an Army captain’s unusual path through some of the most legendary seats of learning straight into a brutal fight with Al Qaeda in Afghanistan, “The Unforgiving Minute” is, above all, an unforgettable portrait of a young soldier grappling with the weight of his hard-earned knowledge while coming to grips with becoming a man.

Several other “common read” events are planned for the fall semester at the University.
