Mankato, Minn. – Jasper Hunt, a professor of experiential education in the College of Education at Minnesota State University, Mankato, will deliver the Kurt Hahn Address from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 1 at the 40th annual International Association for Experiential Education Conference, held Thursday to Sunday (Nov. 1-4) in Madison, Wis.

Hunt will deliver the Kurt Hahn Address as this year’s recipient of the Kurt Hahn Award. The Kurt Hahn Address is presented annually at the conference by a person designated by the Board of Directors who has contributed to the development and advancement of experiential education with the tenacity and conviction exemplified by Kurt Hahn. Hahn (1886-1974) was a leader in the field of experiential education and founded numerous colleges and programs dedicated to educating the whole person.

Hunt is a well-deserving recipient of the Kurt Hahn Award, said Julie Carlson, professor and chair of Minnesota State Mankato’s Department of Educational Leadership.

“There are accomplished professionals around the world who give accolades to Jasper for his influence on them,” Carlson said. “He’s been described as ‘the gardener who planted the seeds of their careers.’”

Donald Friend, professor and chair of the Department of Geography at Minnesota State Mankato, said Hunt’s expertise is known worldwide.

“Jasper Hunt is the consummate education professional,” said Friend. “Because of his background and lifetime of experience in experiential education, he and the experiential education program at Minnesota State Mankato are recognized internationally – literally – as the premier program in the field.”

Jasper Hunt’s involvement in experiential education began in 1969 when he took a standard Outward Bound course at North Carolina Outward Bound School. In 1983, Hunt’s career brought him to Minnesota State Mankato, where he helped in developing the master’s degree program in experiential education that was started in 1972 by Robert Vander Wilt. Hunt served for 25 years as the founding director and director of Minnesota State Mankato’s Adventure Education Program.

Hunt’s involvement with the Association for Experiential Education goes back to the 1970s. He has served continuously with the Journal of Experiential Education since 1980 and currently serves as a member of the publication’s Journal Advisory Committee. He has attended dozens of international and regional Association for Experiential Education conferences and presented at many of those conferences. Graduates of Minnesota State Mankato’s master’s degree program in experiential education are key leaders in the Association for Experiential Education today.
