Series of events set for "Remember November."

Mankato, Minn. – Journalist and food waste expert Jonathan Bloom (pictured at left) will discuss food wastefulness and his book “American Wasteland” in a free public lecture at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13 in Minnesota State University, Mankato’s Centennial Student Union Ballroom
Bloom’s talk on Tuesday and an overnight cardboard village dubbed “Freezin’ For A Reason” that will be set up from 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15 to 7 a.m. Friday, Nov. 16 at the Fountain Mall on campus will highlight “Remember November,” an observance of Hunger and Homelessness Month at Minnesota State Mankato this month.
In addition, a “Turkeypalooza” fundraising campaign will be held throughout November to raise money for the Campus Kitchen meal service, which provides meals—including a Thanksgiving dinner—to Mankato area residents. Donations can be made in the Centennial Student Union’s Student Activities Office (CSU 173) or in donation boxes located throughout the CSU.
Minnesota State Mankato’s Community Engagement Office is sponsoring the “Remember November” events. Assistant Director of Community Engagement Denise Billington-Just said the campus events seek a “celebration of collaboration” that engages students as community volunteers in hunger relief efforts.
“This is a time when we can consider giving back to others,” Billington-Just said. “It’s taking a moment to realize the face of hunger looks back at you each day. “
Other events scheduled during “Remember November”:
Monday - Friday, Nov. 11-16: National Hunger and Homelessness Week Partner Exhibit. This exhibit in the CSU lower level Flex Programming Space will showcase our community partners and demonstrate how our community works together to relieve hunger. Included is a creative station for making holiday greeting cards for Campus Kitchen meal recipients.
Wednesday, Nov. 14, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Helping Hands Across America Food Drive and Chili Cook-Off. Sponsored by University Dining Services, the event in CSU’s main level dining area will pit campus chefs against each other for the best chili honors. Donations received during the event will benefit Campus Kitchen.
Thursday, Nov. 15, 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.: Campus Kitchen at Crossroads Open House. The campus and community are invited to see the Campus Kitchen’s new home at Crossroads Lutheran Campus Ministry, 331 Dillon Avenue, Mankato. Refreshments will be served.
Friday, Nov. 16, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.: Fun Friday. The month’s grand finale event, held in the CSU Flex Programming Space, will include music by Ocho, partner presentations and free popcorn.
