International Student Enrollment Ranks 38th Nationally

Mankato, Minn. – Minnesota State University, Mankato’s international student population of 770 in the fall of 2011 ranked 38th nationally among master’s institutions, according to an annual economic impact analysis recently released by NAFSA: Association of International Educators.
Minnesota State Mankato’s international student enrollment has been on the rise in the last seven years. It was at 447 in the fall of 2005, and rose to 593 in the fall of 2009 before reaching 768 in the fall of 2012.
The increase in international students has made a positive impact on the local economy.
According to the Open Doors and The Association for International Educators analysis, Minnesota State Mankato international students and their families contributed $16.2 million to the local economy during the 2011-12 year. The report is available here.
The University’s five-year goals include increasing overall student enrollment from its current 15,413 to 17,000 and international student enrollment from 768 now to 1,000 by 2017, according to Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management David Jones.
International students currently represent 4.2 percent of the University student enrollment and the goal is for international students to be at 6 percent of student enrollment in 2017, Jones said.
In 2012, Minnesota State Mankato has international students from 86 different nations, with the most students coming from Saudi Arabia, Nepal and South Korea. The University has been selected by the prestigious Edmund F. Muskie and William Fulbright Programs to host eight scholars in 2012-13.
