Mankato, Minn. – Daniel Houlihan of Elysian, Minn., received the 2013 Distinguished Alumni Fitterer Service Award from Minnesota State University, Mankato last week.
Houlihan, director of the School of Psychology Doctoral Program at Minnesota State Mankato, is one of 11 2013 alumni award winners. He was honored at an April 26 ceremony hosted by the Minnesota State Mankato Alumni Association.
Fitterer Service Awards go to graduates who have given distinguished service to Minnesota State Mankato and have used their time, treasure and talents to preserve and promote university programs.
Houlihan graduated from Minnesota State Mankato in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and sociology and then in 1983 received a master’s degree in psychology.
Houlihan has worked in the Department of Psychology at Minnesota State Mankato for 26 years, establishing himself as a full-time professor and director of the School Psychology Doctoral Program.
Houlihan has demonstrated his commitment to Minnesota State Mankato through his willingness to contribute to his students’ higher learning. He has expressed interest in his students’ success by allowing them opportunities to co-author publications with him, while seeking ways to provide additional funding for their educations as well. Houlihan has also mentored junior faculty in the department while publishing and editing various journals.
Houlihan has also researched and worked to put together funding to provide his students the opportunity to do their practicums internationally. He arranged for a five-year commitment for students to be able to travel to Belize for three weeks during the summer.
“They have to wear many hats while they’re there,” Houlihan said. “It’s a really good experience as far as getting them ready to be good practitioners in schools, and be able to take on difficult situations head on.”
