St. Peter’s Jeffrey Olson Receives Distinguished Alumni Award

Mankato, Minn. – Jeffrey Olson of St. Peter, Minn., received the 2013 Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award from Minnesota State University, Mankato last week.

Olson, superintendent of St. Peter Public Schools, is one of 11 2013 alumni award winners. He was honored at an April 26 ceremony hosted by the Minnesota State Mankato Alumni Association.

Alumni Achievement Awards go to graduates who have achieved high rank or honor in their professions and have had a major impact on their communities.

Olson, who completed a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Minnesota State Mankato in 1981, has served the St. Peter Public School system for more than 37 years. He’s been a teacher, coach, curriculum director, high school principal and for the past 13 years, superintendent. In 2013, he was named Minnesota Superintendent of the Year.

Olson’s many professional accomplishments include starting summer programs to assist at-risk elementary students improve their reading. In six years, students have dropped the achievement gap from 23 percent to 12 percent. One of the many partnerships Olson maintains is with the Center for School-University Partnerships, which is based at Minnesota State Mankato and works with seven districts in the region.

Olson was the president of the Minnesota State High School League Board of Directors in 2002-2003. The Minnesota Association of School Administrators (MASA) presented him with the Kay E. Jacobs Memorial Award in 2007, and he received the John Vaughn Regional Excellence in Education Award that same year. He’s been named Teacher of the Year and South West Division Principal of the Year and has been given the Administrator of Excellence award for Southern Minnesota. Olson served as president of the Minnesota Association of School Administrators in 2010-2011 and is on that organization’s Foundation Board of Directors. He was also invited to attend the 2013 State of the Union address in Washington, D.C.
