Mankato, Minn. – James Sneer of Eden Prairie, Minn., received the 2013 Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award from Minnesota State University, Mankato last week.

Sneer, former president and current chair of the board of United Prairie Bank in Mountain Lake, Minn., is one of 11 2013 alumni award winners. He was honored at an April 26 ceremony hosted by the Minnesota State Mankato Alumni Association.

Alumni Achievement Awards go to graduates who have achieved high rank or honor in their professions and have had a major impact on their communities.

Sneer graduated from Minnesota State Mankato in 1959 with a bachelor’s degree in industrial arts and a minor in business. While in school, Sneer participated in football, track and gymnastics.

He became a trend setter for his family, both with education and business. Two subsequent generations have attended or are currently attending his alma mater, and his son has taken over the day-to-day management of United Prairie Bank, the entity that emerged in 1992 from a collection of rural Minnesota banks Sneer had acquired.

Sneer purchased Farmer’s State Bank in his hometown of Mountain Lake in 1973. The bank thrived under his leadership, work ethic, and belief that people and their work should be appreciated and respected. In 2007, Sneer was selected as the “Person of the Year” in Mountain Lake, and he recently celebrated 50 years in banking.

Sneer served numerous terms on the Minnesota State Mankato Foundation Board of Directors between 1996 and 2012 and found time to run 27 marathons.
