Baseball to Host NCAA DII Central Regional

Mankato, Minn. --- Fresh off back-to-back Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference tournament titles, ninth-rated Minnesota State University, Mankato (35-8) has been selected to host the 2013 NCAA Division II Central Region Tournament. The 48-team field was unveiled Sunday evening.

The double-elimination regional tournament, which will be held at Franklin Rogers Park in Mankato, is scheduled to run May 16-19. The regional champion advances to the eight-team championship finals May 25 through June 1 at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C.

The Mavericks, who are making their eighth consecutive trip to the NCAA postseason tournament, will face Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association member Missouri Southern (34-20) in the first round of this year’s tournament that kicks off on Thursday.

Minnesota State Mankato is seeded first, while Missouri Southern is seeded sixth. The two other first round games include: #2 Central Missouri (35-11) vs. #5 St. Cloud State (34-9) and #3 Southern Arkansas (40-15) vs. #4 Missouri Western (40-10). It will be Minnesota State Mankato’s 32nd NCAA tournament appearance, ranking only behind Florida Southern’s 39 trips to the national tournament. The Mavericks stand 50-51 all-time in NCAA regional play and have won six regional titles - 1971, 1979, 1980, 1986, 2010 and 2012. Additionally, it’s the second straight year the Mavericks will host the regional and eighth overall - 1968, 1969, 1971, 1974, 1977, 1988, 2012 and 2013.
