Mankato, Minn. – Barry Ries has been named associate vice president for research and dean of the College of Graduate Studies at Minnesota State University, Mankato, effective July 1. Ries’ appointment was announced today by Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs Linda Baer after a national search in which the incoming provost, Marilyn Wells, also participated.

“I want to congratulate Dr. Ries on this appointment,” said Baer. “We look forward to his continued leadership of our outstanding graduate programs and research at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.”

Ries has served as interim dean of the College of Graduate Studies and Research since July, 2011. He joined the faculty in the Department of Psychology at Minnesota State Mankato in 1996 after completing his clinical psychology residency at the University of Mississippi and Veterans Affairs Medical Centers in Jackson, Miss.

Ries served as department chair from 2008-2011 and served for six years as director of clinical training for the clinical psychology master’s program. Ries has also served on the University Institutional Review Board (IRB) since 1997. Along with his colleague, Melissa Polusny, Ries was awarded the 2000 Douglas R. Moore Faculty Research Lectureship, which highlighted the empirical findings of research supported by a grant from the National Institute of Mental Health.

Ries has received several private and university-funded research grants and has been a clinical research consultant for Mayo Health Systems and Immanuel St. Joseph’s Hospital. He maintains an active research agenda and continues to utilize his Anxiety and Phobia Research Laboratory for training graduate and undergraduate students. Ries’ interest in international education has led to opportunities for partnerships with the Ministry of Education and University of Belize.
Ries said he plans to build on those current partnerships in his position as associate vice president and dean.

“I look forward to continuing my work with Minnesota State Mankato by contributing to the advancement of graduate education and research,” said Ries. “I am honored to be given this opportunity to work with the excellent faculty, staff, students and administrators on strategic initiatives to enhance the university’s reputation as an educational leader in the state of Minnesota.”

Minnesota State Mankato, a comprehensive university with 15,413 students, is part of the Minnesota State Colleges & Universities system, which comprises 31 state institutions.
