Pueblo, Colo. --- Junior Minnesota State University, Mankato thrower Chris Reed (pictured at left) capped off a successful weekend at the NCAA Division II Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships Saturday as he won a national championship in the shot put event.
As a team, Minnesota State Mankato finished in a tie for 12th place with 25 points.
Reed won the shot put event with a throw of 65-7 en route to establishing a new MInnesota State Mankato record in the event, surpassing his previous mark of 62 1/2 he set back in 2012.
With his national championship in the shot put event, Reed becomes just the fifth Maverick to win a national championship in an outdoor event and the first since Jim Dilling won the high jump event back in 2007. He is also the first Maverick to win a national title in the shot put.
Reed’s first place finish in the shot put caps off an already impressive showing as he garnered three All-American honors (discus, hammer throw, shot put), while establishing new school records in both the hammer throw and the shot put events. Reed is only the second Maverick to post three All-American honors in a single championship and the first since Moo Muhammad dating back to the 1989 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships where he finished in the top eight in the long jump, 100 meter dash and 200 meter dash events.
