Minnesota State University, Mankato Athletic Communications Office, 6-3-2013

Mankato, Minn. -- Second-ranked Minnesota State University, Mankato came up one win short in its quest for its first-ever NCAA DII Baseball Championship.

The Mavericks were doomed by a five-run second inning by Tampa in an 8-2 loss to the top-rated Spartans on Saturday at Coleman Field inside the USA Baseball National Training Complex.

The second-place finish was the highest in the NCAA DII Baseball Championship by any team in Minnesota State Mankato baseball history, and the Mavericks finished the year with a 42-9 overall record.

Three Minnesota State Mankato players -- sophomore catcher Nolan Johnson, senior second baseman Lucas Skjefte and junior pitcher Jason Hoppe were all named to the NCAA DII Baseball Championship All-Tournament Team.
