'Big Ideas' Campaign concludes with record $77.8 million raised

Amount raised is largest in MnSCU history.

Minnesota State University, Mankato Media Relations Office News Release, 9-20-2013

Mankato, Minn. – Minnesota State University, Mankato President Richard Davenport announced today the successful completion of the largest comprehensive campaign in the history of Minnesota State Mankato as well as the Minnesota State Colleges & Universities system.

Minnesota State Mankato closed its comprehensive Big Ideas Campaign on Aug. 31 after raising $77.8 million – exceeding the campaign’s $75 million goal – for student scholarship programs, student-faculty research opportunities and future capital projects.

Davenport said the primary message he wanted to convey as the University surpassed its campaign goal was to “tell our donors and friends of the institution who contributed to the campaign how appreciative we are for their generosity.”

“It is important to understand the impact of the gifts cannot be measured in dollars,” said Davenport. “A big idea from just one student has the potential for changing the world. Our graduates, who benefit from the Big Ideas Campaign, will help shape our future and become the leaders of tomorrow. Their education at Minnesota State Mankato has prepared them to tackle the complexities and challenges of our global environment.”

Minnesota State Mankato publicly announced its $75 million Big Ideas Campaign on Oct. 27, 2011. At that time, $57 million (76 percent of the goal) had already been raised in the campaign’s silent phase, which began in 2006.

In less than two years, more than $20.8 million additional funds have been raised to close out the record-breaking campaign. Dozens of programs, students and faculty have benefited from campaign donations since 2006. A few of those include:

  • State-of-the-art Building Information Modeling software for Construction Management students.
  • Opportunities for students and faculty to collaborate on research in the emerging fields of renewable and alternative energy sources at the University’s Centers for Renewable Energy and Automotive Research.
  • Opportunities for education majors to study worldwide, from the United States to Australia to the United Arab Emirates.
  • The Nadine B. Andreas Endowment in Arts and Humanities, established in 2007 by the Andreas family. The Andreas Endowment brings big-name artists and thought leaders to campus for tranformational learning experiences.
  • Funding to help pay for flight training for aviation students.
  • The Glen Taylor Nursing Institute for Family and Society, the Becky Taylor Doctoral Fellowship in Nursing and The Glen Taylor Family and Society Endowed Nursing Faculty Chair, established in 2009 by alumnus Glen and Becky Taylor. The Glen Taylor Institute, Becky Taylor Fellowships and Taylor Family Endowed Chair seek to dramatically change the family nursing experience for Minnesotans, the nation and the world.
  • Startup funding for the College of Business Global Solutions Center and the Integrated Business Experience program. When fully funded, the new center will let students and faculty collaborate across disciplines to provide real-world solutions for global problems.
  • Real-world opportunities for students and faculty to participate in archaeological digs near Red Wing, Minn.
  • Opportunities for students and faculty in six campus programs – audiology, dental hygiene, school psychology, school social work and industrial/organizational psychology and speech/language pathology – to gain hands-on experience working with impoverished children in Belize.
  • The opportunity to expand the holdings of the Map Library.
