NCAA Fines Minnesota State Mankato $2,500
Inadvertent secondary rules violation will have no impact on current seasons.

Mankato, Minn. – The NCAA recently imposed a $2,500 fine on Minnesota State University, Mankato’s Athletic Department for a secondary/level III rules violation involving two student-athletes who inadvertently repeated a course in the spring 2012 semester.
The penalty will not have any effect on NCAA postseason eligibility for any teams or student-athletes in 2013-14, and the NCAA concluded that nullification penalties will not apply to any regular season or championship events in which the two student-athletes participated during the 2012-13 calendar year.
Minnesota State Mankato self-reported the situation to the NCAA immediately upon learning of the administrative error, which occurred because of a course title change that was not identified through the University’s normal screening process to detect course duplication.
The automated screening process has now been corrected and no other issues were identified after a manual review of the academic transcripts of all currently enrolled student-athletes.
The NCAA subsequently granted reinstatement of both student-athletes prior to competition during the 2013-14 academic year, and each of these student-athletes are active and eligible to compete on current-year rosters in football and track and field.
“As is always the case, the University and our department remain committed to the highest levels of integrity in operating our program,” said Director of Athletics Kevin Buisman. “I think it is important to note this administrative error was unintentional and that the academic performance of the student-athletes did not contribute to their deficiency. We accept the decision the NCAA has made and appreciate the discretion they exercised in determining what we feel was a fair and appropriate consequence given the circumstance.”
Minnesota State Mankato is waiting for notification from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference as to whether or not the conference would take action, which could include the possibility of nullification penalties that would affect team won-loss percentages and impact 2012-13 final conference standings and results of individual sport championships.
Minnesota State Mankato, a comprehensive university with 15,409 students, is part of the Minnesota State Colleges & Universities system, which comprises 31 state institutions.
