Former Maverick Backes Named to U.S. Olympic Team

Former Maverick David Backes was named to the U.S. Olympic men's hockey team on Wednesday.

Mankato, Minn. -- Former Minnesota State University, Mankato men's hockey player David Backes was named to the U.S. Olympic men's hockey team on Wednesday.

Backes, currently the team captain of the National Hockey League's St. Louis Blues, played three seasons (2003-04, 2004-05, 2005-06) at Minnesota State Mankato, scoring 46 goals and recording 73 assists (119 points) in 115 games for the Mavericks.

Backes plans to graduate in May 2014 from Minnesota State Mankato with a degree in applied organizational studies.

The 29-year old Backes is in his eighth season with the Blues, and at the time he was named to the Olympic team had 16 goals and 14 assists in 35 NHL games this season.

This marks the second time Backes has been named to the U.S. Olympic team and fifth time he has represented his country in international competition. He played on the 2010 U.S. Olympic team, helping the United States win a silver medal, and was also a member of the 2007, 2008 and 2008 U.S. World Championship Teams.

The 2014 Winter Olympics will be held from Feb. 7-23 in Sochi, Russia.
