Jan. 14: Free Dance Concert
Shapiro & Smith Dance of Minneapolis to perform at Ted Paul Theatre.
Minnesota State University, Mankato Department of Theatre and Dance News Release, 1-8-2014
As part of its two-week residency with the Minnesota State University, Mankato Department of Theatre & Dance, Shapiro & Smith Dance of Minneapolis will present a free concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14, in the Ted Paul Theatre of the Earley Center for Performing Arts. Following the concert there will be a short talk-back session with company dancers.
(NOTE FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE AND DANCE: "There will be partial nudity in the last 10 minutes of the evening's show. It is very tasteful and very much in keeping with the subject matter of the final work, a meditation on the holocaust." Attendees will be permitted to leave before that piece, should they choose to do so.)
Shapiro & Smith Dance has a reputation for performing tales of beauty and biting wit that run the gamut from provocative to hilarious. Dancing with physicality and emotional depth, they have earned an international reputation for virtuosity, substance and craft. Founded in 1985, the Company began as a collaboration between Danial Shapiro and Joanie Smith. Shapiro died of complications from prostate cancer in 2006 and now Joanie Smith continues as sole Artistic Director.
While in residency, the company also will work with students to choreograph a piece to be presented at the Fall Concert in 2014.
This activity is made possible by a grant provided by the Minnesota State Arts Board through an appropriation by the Minnesota State Legislature from the State’s general fund and its Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund with the money from the vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008.
