Minnesota State University, Mankato Media Relations Office Announcement, 3-10-2014

Mankato, Minn. -- Minnesota State University, Mankato is hosting the Whipper Snapper Spring Climbing Competitition on Sunday, March 30 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on campus at the indoor climbing wall in Myers Field House. The competition finals will begin at approximately 5:30 p.m.

The event is expected to draw 90 competitors and 150 spectators.

The competition is open to all ages, all abilities and will include many Minnesota State Mankato students and Mankato-area community members.

A link to an online registration form is posted here for those interested in competing. Cost is $30 and includes a tank top-style competition shirt (if registered before March 15) and the opportunity to participate in a drawing for prizes.

This year’s Whipper Snapper is a USA climbing event for the Collegiate Climbing Series, meaning that the event will attract climbers and climbing teams from Minnesota State Mankato and many other universities from the midwest region.

Climbers will be scored on climbing a route ‘clean’ (meaning that they only use the assigned holds that are marked with route-tape). There will be 46 all-new climbing routes set on the Minnesota State Mankato climbing wall.

Points are collected for male and female climbers within four divisions: basic, intermediate, advanced and open. The advanced and open climbers will also climb on ‘lead-climbing' routes (securing their rope as they climb), and there is a finals round for both the advanced and open divisions.
