Baseball Team Advances to NCAA Division II World Series

Mavericks win third consecutive regional championship.

Mankato, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University, Mankato baseball team defeated Emporia State 6-3 on Sunday in Russellville, Ark., to capture its third consecutive NCAA Division II Central Region title and fourth in the past five years.

The Mavericks (45-9 overall) won all four of their games at the regional, opening with an 11-5 win over Emporia State on Thursday, beating Southern Arkansas 6-3 on Friday and topping Arkansas Tech 5-2 on Sunday before knocking off Emporia State on Sunday for the second time in the regional. The region title sends the Mavericks to the NCAA Division II College World Series for the eighth time in school history. Minnesota State Mankato will open tournament play against Seton Hill (40-15 overall) at noon (Central time) on Sunday, May 25 in Cary, N.C.

The eight-team, double-elimination championship tournament begins Saturday, May 24 and continues through Saturday, May 31. The University of Mount Olive in Cary, N.C., is the tournament host. In addition to Minnesota State Mankato and Seton Hill, other participating teams include St. Thomas Aquinas, Southern Indiana, Tampa, Colorado Mesa, Lander and Chico State.

Tampa is the defending national champion. The Mavericks finished second last season to mark Minnesota State Mankato's best-ever national finish at the championship tournament.
