Mankato, Minn. – This week Minnesota State University, Mankato is welcoming the largest group of new international students ever to participate in International Student Orientation at the university.

As of Wednesday, 335 new international students had participated in International Student Orientation, said Tom Gjersvig, director of International Student and Scholar Services at Minnesota State Mankato.

Although Minnesota State Mankato’s International Student Orientation began Tuesday and continued through Thursday (Aug. 21), Gjersvig said he expects additional international students to arrive in the coming days. Make-up orientation sessions will be held throughout the weekend.

“We anticipate reaching 350 new students, as some of those who had travel and/or visa delays arrive over the weekend,” said Gjersvig.

Minnesota State Mankato holds International Student Orientation twice a year – in August and January the week before the fall and spring semesters begin. Classes for the fall 2014 semester begin Monday, Aug. 25.

During the 2013-2014 academic year, Minnesota State Mankato served more than 900 international students from more than 90 countries and fully expects to have total international enrollments matching last year’s numbers. In the November 2013 “Open Doors Report,” released annually by the Institute of International Education, Minnesota State Mankato’s international student population was ranked 34th nationally among master’s institutions, up from 38th the previous year.

International Student and Scholar Services provides staff support to the International Student Association, which sponsors specific nationality nights and international-focused celebrations throughout the year while also providing leadership opportunities to Minnesota State Mankato international students.
