Nov. 18: ‘Steerage Song’

Musical by Theatre Latté Da of Minneapolis features immigrants’ stories.

Minnesota State University, Mankato Department of Theatre and Dance News Release, 10-28-2014

Mankato, Minn -- The Minnesota State University, Mankato Department of Theatre & Dance will host Theatre Latté Da of Minneapolis in a performance of their “Steerage Song” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, in the Ted Paul Theatre of the Earley Center for Performing Arts. Tickets are $16 regular, $14 discounted and $11 for current Minnesota State Mankato students.

According to information provided by Theatre Latté Da: “Ellis Island was the gateway to America—a land of opportunity for some, a land of exclusion for others. Five thousand immigrants a day passed through this ‘Island of Hope, Island of Tears.’ Packed into the steerage of steamships, they left their homelands with few possessions but a wealth of hope, promise and music.”

“Steerage Song” is a musical that tries to capture the adventure of these immigrants’ journey to America. It premiered in concert form at the Fitzgerald Theater in 2011, created by Peter Rothstein and Dan Chouinard. The “docu-musical” blends songs of 20 countries of Old Europe and the rhythms of Tin Pan Alley.

Tickets may be purchased online at, or by calling or stopping by the Theatre & Dance Box Office between 4 & 6 p.m. Monday-Friday or one hour before other performanes. Call 507-389-6661.
