City of Mankato News Release
Mankato, Minn. -- Pueblo, Colorado Council President Steve Nawrocki (who attended Mankato State College in 1965) has challenged Mankato Mayor Eric Anderson to a competition of local flavor. If Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks win the Division II national football championship Saturday, in Kansas City, Mo., Mankato will receive a case of Pueblo green chili salsa--native to the Pueblo area.
Mayor Anderson accepts the challenge, and countered with a case of Compart Family Farms' superior quality smoked pulled pork (homegrown in southern Minnesota--an area agriculture leader) for Pueblo, if the Colorado State University-Pueblo team wins. "Exchanging city greetings with products from our respective areas is a fun way to acknowledge our talented, local college athletes and their ambassadorship," said Mayor Anderson. "Ambassadors of the area bring honor and recognition to the city and help put Mankato on the map."
Since the Mankato area is a national leader in agriculture, it seems fitting that a unique opportunity, like a national championship, be countered with agriculture products since they are so significant to the local economy.
