Feb. 19-March 1: ‘Life Is A Dream’

Classic Spanish Renaissance drama to be performed in Ted Paul Theatre.

Minnesota State University, Mankato Department of Theatre and Dance News Release, 2-3-2015

The Minnesota State Mankato Department of Theatre & Dance will present Pedro Calderon de la Barca’s “Life Is A Dream” with performances Feb. 19 through March 1 in the Ted Paul Theatre of the Earley Center for Performing Arts.

Astrological omens predict that if King Basilio’s son Segismundo is crowned, he will become a horrible tyrant who will bring destruction to his kingdom in this classic spanish renaissance drama. Basilio imprisons Segismundo for life, but decades later he decides to let his son prove his ability to defy the stars. Will the results defy prediction or fulfill them? This is its Minnesota State Mankato debut.

“Life Is A Dream” is directed by Department Chair Paul J. Hustoles, with scenic design by John David Paul and costume design by David McCarl, two faculty members. The cast includes junior BFA Musical Theatre candidate Jake Sullivan, who appeared earlier this season as Atticus Finch in “To Kill A Mockingbird,” as King Basilio, and Ben Stasny, senior BFA Acting candidate Ben Stasny, who appeared as Lumiere in “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast,” as Segismundo.

Performances of “Assassins” continue this Wednesday through Sunday, Feb. 4-8, in the Andreas Theatre.

Individual tickets for “Life Is A Dream” are $16 regular, $14 for senior citizens, youth 16 and under and groups of 15 or more, and $11 for current Minnesota State students. They are available online at, or during box office hours of 4-6 p.m., Monday-Friday, and one hour before performances. Call 507-389-6661.
