Feb. 28: Jazz Guitarist Mike Stern
Performance in Halling Recital Hall.
Minnesota State University, Mankato Department of Music News Release, 2-18-2015
Mankato, Minn. – The Department of Music welcomes jazz legend Mike Stern on Saturday, Feb. 28. Stern’s appearance with the University Jazz Mavericks concludes activities associated with the Contemporary Music Festival taking place that day. The performance takes place at 7:30 p.m. in the Elias J. Halling Recital Hall of the Earley Center for Performing Arts, 320 Maywood Ave.
This year the festival has changed from a JazzFest format to a Contemporary Music Festival. This allows contemporary music groups that fall outside of the traditional jazz genre to participate such as hip hop ensembles and a capella pop groups. Bands are judged on overall performance and receive oral and written critiques from qualified judges. Topical clinics are held by visiting artists and clinicians. All clinics are free and open to all festival participants, directors, and the public.
Mike Stern’s career encompasses a sequence of partnerships ranging from the Miles Davis Group, the Brecker Brothers, Blood Sweat and Tears and his own dynamic groups. A six-time Grammy nominee, Stern was listed by DownBeat magazine as one of the 75 all time best guitarists in the world.
The festival concert will also feature Kenni Holman (sax -The Hornheads), Ryan Frane (piano - Director of Jazz at the University of Minnesota-Duluth), Jeff Bailey (bass -McNally Smith College of Music), and Steve Jennings (drums - McNally Smith College of Music).
Concert admission is $15; $13 for students with a valid MavCARD. Discount tickets are available online for University students. Those who wish to purchase tickets online should go to www.mnsu.edu/music. For more information, call the Performance Series office, 507-389-5549.
