Minnesota State University, Mankato Media Relations Office Announcement, 3-17-2015

Mankato, Minn. -- Two visiting sociologists who teach at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Dr. Mark Hudson and Dr. Mara Fridell, will speak on "How Fair is Fair? Social Justice and the Fair Trade Movement" in a lecture at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 17 in Minnesota State University, Mankato's Centennial Student Union 253/4.

Hudson and Fridell will discuss the potential of fair trade to combat poverty and as a means of revealing the people, relationships and environments that lie behind the commodities we often unthinkingly consume. The talk will chart the recent trajectory of the fair trade movement, indicating its impressive success, as well as some troubling signs for the future of fair trade’s ability to realize its potential.

The lecture will include a question and answer session, and a reception with refreshments and an opportunity to talk with the speakers will follow.

Hudson and Fridell, with co-author Ian Hudson, contributed to a book on fair trade that was published in 2013 titled "Fair Trade, Sustainability and Social Change."
