Minnesota State University, Mankato Department of Music News Release, 4-9-2015

Mankato, Minn. – The University Percussion Ensembles will present a spring concert on Tuesday, April 21 at 7:30 p.m. The concert takes place in the Elias J. Halling Recital Hall of the Earley Center for Performing Arts, 320 Maywood Ave.

Michael Thursby, director of athletic bands, leads the ensembles.

The event will feature a wide variety of music from different cultures and musical traditions. The concert opens with a traditional style brass band tune with percussion, followed by West African pieces performed on the djembe.

Percussion major Jeremy Friedrichs will perform a marimba solo entitled "Rain Dance" by Alice Gomez. The groups will come together to perform a bucket piece written by ensemble member Joey Chismar-Atkinson.

A special feature of the evening is the inaugural performance of the University’s newly donated Guatemalan marimbas. The Joe Meidl family of Mankato recently donated the marimbas to the Department of Music. The concert closes with a traditional Brazilian samba.
