Performance to take place at the historic Kato Ballroom.
Minnesota State University, Mankato Department of Music News Release, 4-10-2015
Mankato, Minn. – The University Concert Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band will perform with special guests on Friday, April 24 at 7:30 p.m. at the Historic Kato Ballroom, 200 Chestnut St., Mankato. The bands are under the direction of Dr. Amy Roisum Foley, Mr. Michael Thursby, and Mr. Erik Root.
This concert promises to be a unique performance. The Garfield Elementary Band, under the direction of Amy Olson, will open the concert. The 34th Infantry "Red Bull” Brass Quintet will join the University groups to perform “Mass” by Leonard Bernstein. The third piece is titled “Cave (of the Winds)” by Russell Peck. It is a performance art piece in that the music is memorized and there are specific guidelines for choreographed movement by the ensemble. University Professor of Voice Dr. Stephanie Thorpe will lend her considerable vocal skills to a performance of “Spring” by Johan de Meij. All three bands will perform John Williams’ theme from “Star Wars” at the end of the concert. The percussion and sit-down instruments will remain in the band seating area and the rest of the players will surround the audience.
Concert admission is $9; $7 for students with a valid MavCard. Discount tickets are available online for University students. Advance purchase is strongly encouraged. Those who wish to purchase tickets online should go to www.mnsu.edu/music. For more information, call the Performance Series office, 507-389-5549.
