University Faculty Member Named '2015 Social Worker of the Year'
Annelies Hagemeister will be honored June 5 by the Minnesota chapter of the National Association of Social Workers.

Mankato, Minn. – Minnesota State University, Mankato faculty member Annelies Hagemeister has been recognized as the 2015 Social Worker of the Year by the National Association of Social Workers – Minnesota.
The “2015 Social Worker of the Year Award” will be presented to Hagemeister on Friday, June 5, during a two-day conference organized by National Association of Social Workers - Minnesota. The 25th annual Minnesota state conference, “60 years of NASW: uniting for a better future” will be held June 4 and 5 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in St. Paul.
Hagemeister is a professor and chairperson of the Department of Social Work at Minnesota State Mankato. Her primary teaching areas include social work research, social welfare policy and domestic violence. Her scholarly interests include domestic violence, violence prevention, applied program evaluation, cultural diversity issues, qualitative research, cross-disciplinary collaboration and grief.
Hagemeister is receiving the award for outstanding leadership and for service she has provided to the profession and the community. She has worked at the Minnesota Center against Violence and Abuse; the Domestic Abuse Project in Minneapolis; worked in violence prevention with Illusion Theater; and in crisis intervention services with Crisis Connection in Minneapolis (formerly YES/NEON).
In addition, she has co-authored articles published in scholarly journals such as the “Journal of Interpersonal Violence,” “Child Maltreatment,” and “Death Studies.” She also co-authored a book chapter on poverty and social work with Paul Mackie in 2007.
“I am thrilled, but frankly not surprised, that Dr. Annelies Hagemeister is being named ‘Social Worker of the Year,’” said Maria Bevacqua, acting dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at Minnesota State Mankato. “She is a practitioner of the highest integrity who does an outstanding job of serving the community. Always thoughtful and always engaged, she puts the needs of the people she serves first. Her work is heavily influenced by her commitment to social justice. The College of Social and Behavioral Sciences is proud of Annelies Hagemeister’s accomplishments.”
The Social Worker of the Year Award honors a member of the National Association of Social Workers who exemplifies the best of the profession’s values and achievements through specific accomplishments. In honoring the social worker of the year, the National Association of Social Workers highlights superb accomplishments in the practice of social work.
The University’s Department of Social Work is part of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at Minnesota State Mankato.
