Aug. 6: Alum, BBQ Champ Coming to Campus

Former wrestler Pat Nelson competing at RibFest

Mankato, Minn. – National barbecue champ and former Minnesota State University, Mankato wrestler Pat Nelson is bringing his award-winning Big Boned BBQ team to Mankato’s annual RibFest Aug. 6-9 at Mankato’s Riverfront Park.

Before Nelson takes to the RibFest grounds, the University community has the chance for a sneak peek at (and taste of) some of the goods he’ll be cooking. At 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 6, Nelson and his crew will be on campus demonstrating various tricks and techniques to great barbecuing as well as offering samples. The demonstration will take place in the mall of the Centennial Student Union.

South Carolina-based Big Boned BBQ has taken several awards for pork, sauce and ribs across the country. Nelson’s pulled pork grabbed top honors at Mankato’s 2014 RibFest. This year the 1993 Minnesota State Mankato alumnus hopes to snag the People’s Choice Award. The company website is

While attending Minnesota State Mankato, Nelson was a member of the University’s wrestling team and served as graduate assistant coach for the 1994 team.
