Nov. 18: Annual GIS Day Celebration

Geography department to celebrate worldwide Geographic Information Systems Day on campus.

Mankato, Minn. – Minnesota State University, Mankato’s Department of Geography will celebrate the annual Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Day on Wednesday, Nov. 18 with an open house from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and student GIS competition from 11 a.m. to noon in Centennial Student Union Room 253.

The Nov. 18 GIS Day events at Minnesota State Mankato, held to promote “Geospatial Thinking: Real-World Solutions,” are free and open to the public. There will be numerous local government agencies and private companies participating in the campus event.

The work of Minnesota State Mankato undergraduate and graduate students who are participating in the University’s Dr. Mary T. Dooley poster competition will be on display at informational tables displaying GIS-related work. This is the third consecutive year that Minnesota State Mankato’s Department of Geography will offer activities in celebration of GIS Day, which was first formally held in 1999, according to GIS Day is celebrated during Geography Awareness Week (held each year during the third week of November). Geography Awareness Week was designated through legislation signed by President Ronald Reagan in 1987 and is sponsored by the National Geographic Society.

Minnesota State Mankato’s Department of Geography is part of the University’s College of Social and Behavioral Sciences.
