Mankato, Minn. -- Minnesota State University, Mankato is proud to announce the public release of MavCLASS, a student success tool that alerts learners via their mobile devices to important campus deadlines and events to help them manage their time and improve their ability to stay in school and engage as an active part of the Maverick community.

The tool, which can be downloaded for free from the iTunes, Google Play and Windows app stores, sends alerts around critical campus events such as financial aid, registration or graduation deadlines. The tool is intended to help students remember these events that might make the difference between staying in school or missing a critical deadline.

There are also a number of optional calendars that students can subscribe to, including athletics, theater and the arts, and campus events, with the potential for additional calendars in the future. The tool is also being used in a pilot to deploy academic alerts in several high-enrollment gateway courses to help students be more successful in these courses.

"This tool has the potential to reach students where they are," said David Jones, Minnesota State Mankato's vice president for student affairs and enrollment management and interim chief information officer. "Students are using email less and less, and are looking to their mobile devices as a critical mode of communication. MavCLASS offers us the opportunity to support students in a more natural way, using technology that they are increasingly dependent upon and using to structure their lives."

The tool has a great deal of opportunity for expansion into other areas, said Guarionex Salivia, Minnesota State Mankato assistant professor of computer and information services and director of the MavGAMES Center, who was one of the lead designers and developers of the tool.

"MavCLASS is just beginning," said Salivia. "There is so much opportunity to use analytics and data to tailor messages to students, faculty and staff to help drive their success. We'll be working with ITS, Academic Affairs, Institutional Diversity and other campus partners to develop tools to be the most helpful to students and faculty into the future."

Any campus users having difficulty downloading or installing the app can contact the ITS Service Desk, 507-389-6654, Instructors interested in using the system for alerts in their courses can also contact the service desk.
