March 30: Contemporary Music Festival

Guest artist Urban Renewal Project to join jazz Mavericks big band in performance.

Minnesota State University, Mankato Media Relations Office Announcement, 3-24-2016

Minnesota State University, Mankato’s music department will present a Contemporary Music Festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 30. The event will take place in Ostrander Auditorium and the Centennial Student Union Ballroom.

The event is free and open to the public.

The festival will feature performances from the Minnesota State Mankato percussion ensemble (along with a collaboration with David Dickau's chamber singers), jazz lab band, electronic music industry collective, a cappella vocal groups and jazz and rock combos.

The jazz Mavericks big band will be accompanied by guest artists (saxophonist, vocalist and rapper) from Urban Renewal Project, a group based in Los Angeles. Also, Maverick Elision, the University’s competitive a cappella group, will preview an upcoming performance for the SingStrongDC festival that will take place April 1 in Reston, Va.

The festival will occur during a visit from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). HLC accredits degree-granting post-secondary educational institutions in the North Central region of the United States and conducts a full review of accreditation every 10 years to make sure the institution meets certain standards in a variety of terms.

HLC members are encouraged to attend this event to see “real world” efforts to meet the needs of students, present diverse styles and genres and present collaborative works.
