MANKATO – Minnesota State University, Mankato Theatre & Dance is launching its very special 50th “Golden Anniversary” Season of Highland Summer Theatre with the hilarious Christopher Durang comedy “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike.”
“Vanya” runs 7:30 p.m. May 25-28 in the Andreas Theatre, and tickets are $16 regular; and $14 for seniors ages 65 and older, children under 16 and groups of 15 or more.
About the play: Winner of the 2013 Tony Award for Best Play, middle-aged siblings Vanya and Sonia share a home in Bucks County, Penn., where they bicker and complain about the circumstances of their lives. Suddenly, their movie-star sister, Masha, swoops in with her new boy toy, Spike. Old resentments flare up, eventually leading to threats to sell the house. Also on the scene are sassy maid Cassandra, who can predict the future, and a lovely young aspiring actress named Nina, whose prettiness somewhat worries the imperious Masha.
Season “Golden Tickets” are on sale for $66 for all four shows of Highland until May 28. In addition to “Vanya,” Highland will present: “Seussical,” 7:30 p.m. June 8-11 in the Ted Paul Theatre; “The Nerd,” 7:30 p.m. June 22-25 in the Andreas Theatre; and “Footloose,” 7:30 p.m. July 7-9 and 13-16 in the Ted Paul Theatre.
To celebrate the special season, alumni are involved in all four productions to honor the past. There also will be five large lobby exhibits that each focus on one decade of Highland Summer Theatre, beginning in 1967 when it all began with “Barefoot in the Park.”
