Nov. 8: Latino Engineering & Academic Day
More than 225 high school students expected to attend event at Minnesota State Mankato.

Mankato, Minn. – More than 225 high school students and school representatives from at least 10 Minnesota high schools are expected to attend the annual “Latino Engineering & Academic Day” Tuesday, Nov. 8 from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Minnesota State University, Mankato’s Centennial Student Union Ballroom.
The mission of Latino Engineering & Academic Day is to encourage and motivate Latino youth in grades 9-12 to pursue education opportunities in areas of engineering and to increase their access to higher education.
Hosts for the event are Minnesota State Mankato’s Division of Institutional Diversity in collaboration with the University’s College of Science, Engineering and Technology and the Minnesota Center for Engineering and Manufacturing Excellence. Also collaborating on the event is Opportunity, Access, Success, Intercultural Services (OASIS) along with business sponsors Verizon Wireless and Bolton & Menk, Inc.
The students will arrive and check in from 9-10 a.m., and after a 10 a.m. welcome, Karla Ortiz, a Minnesota State Mankato alumna who is now a business strategy manager for Cummins Inc., will deliver a keynote address from 10:15 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
From 10:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., students will participate in a wide range of demonstrations, activities and conversations with Latino professionals in engineering and other STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields, a campus tour and more. There will be a lunch and student panel discussion from 12:45 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
