Mankato, Minn. – Minnesota State University, Mankato will host approximately 180 students from nine different high schools in the Twin Cities and Mankato area during “Girls Explore STEAM Academic Day” Monday, Oct. 30 from 9 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. in the Centennial Student Union Ballroom.

The event will allow the students an opportunity to explore education and careers in the fields of science, technology, engineering, art and design and mathematics.

The Girls Explore STEAM Academic Day will involve engaging, fun topics of science, technology, engineering and math. It is intended to promote appreciation for science, technology, engineering and mathematics in today’s youth. According to the Census Bureau’s 2011 American Community Survey (ACS) (see page 7 at this link), U.S. women comprise just 25.8 percent of STEM workers despite making up 47.5 percent of the workforce.

The students will arrive and check in from 9-10 a.m., followed by a 10 a.m. welcome. From 10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., the students will break into three groups to participate in interactive activities and demonstrations, take campus tours and learn about college preparation.

A student panel and lunch is at 12:15-12:45 p.m., followed by a keynote speaker from 12:45-1:15 p.m., closing remarks and then dismissal and departure.
