Mankato, Minn. -- Minnesota State Mankato’s Department of Philosophy welcomes students, faculty and other members of the campus community to attend an upcoming lecture by faculty member Joshua Preiss (pictured) titled “Equal Opportunity in Winner-Take-All Societies.” The lecture will be at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, in Morris Hall 103.
Preiss provided the following preview of his presentation:
In the past several decades we have witnessed the dramatic transformation of the American economy, including slower growth, rising income and wealth inequality, a polarized labor market, and a precipitous decline in absolute mobility. In this lecture, part of a forthcoming book on Winner-Take-All Societies, we consider the implications of these trends for a widely-celebrated value of American public philosophy: the idea of equal opportunity. What does this value or principle entail, and can it be realized or maintained, in an economy where a small number of “winners” capture a larger and larger share of the fruits of economic growth?
Preiss is associate professor of philosophy and co-director of the Program in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at Minnesota State University, Mankato.
