Students, Parents, Family Members Invited to Weekend of Family Events

Family Weekend 2013 at Minnesota State University, Mankato is scheduled for October 11-13 this year.

In the fall of each year, families of current students are invited to campus to enjoy a weekend full of activities, intended to ease the transition for their students.  This is a chance for families to meet faculty and staff and learn more about their student's experiences.  With this knowledge, families can contribute to their student's success.

This event is centered around a Maverick Football game, but attendance to the game is not required.  There are many activities for all members of the family.

House Party

For the eleventh year in a row, Minnesota State University, Mankato's Student Health Services will co-host an educational event called House Party along with other Minnesota State Mankato departments and the Mankato Department of Public Safety & Lincoln Park Neighborhood Association.  This year's House Party will take place on Thursday, October 17 from 8:30 - 10:30 p.m. at the Phi Delta Theta house, located at 639 South 4th Street.

A free shuttle bus will run at:

  • 8:30 p.m., 9:00 p.m., 9:30 p.m., and 10:00 p.m. - pick up from the front of Julia Sears and Preska Residence Communities
  • 10:00 p.m. - pick up from the bus stop at Stadium Heights

Our goal is to educate students on the dangers of high-risk drinking.  This event is a mock house party where students take a tour of an off-campus house and explore a "house party" from a sober perspective.  Student volunteers act out scenarios that students may have encountered at a real house party.  Students will be given statistical information about the prevalence of high-risk behaviors and then will be educated on how they can better keep themselves and their friends safe if they do choose to drink.

Your Residence Hall Association will be offering an incentive to attend this event.  Any floor that has at least ten students attend House Party will be entered into a drawing to receive $50 in floor funds!

For more information about the mock House Party, contact Katelyn Anderson at or 507-389-3239.

Residential Life Communication Research - Raise Your Voice!

Residential Life Graduate Students are looking to better understand what our residents want to hear about and how they would like to receive information.

Are you interested in helping us create this plan?

Two ways to help:
1.  A five-question survey will be e-mailed to you Monday, October 14 and Monday, November 12.
2. Join a focus group discussion in your lobby on Monday, October 28:

Crawford                 6:15 - 6:45 p.m.
McElroy                  7:00 - 7:30 p.m.
Julia Sears              7:45 - 8:15 p.m.
Preska                    8:30 - 9:00 p.m.
Stadium Heights      9:30 - 10:00 p.m.
(The focus group at Stadium Heights will be located at building 721 apartment 202.)

Focus groups will involve a thirty-minute commitment.  At the end of the session two names of participants will be drawn for $10 gift cards!  Participation in the communication survey is separate from the Xbox and pizza party survey incentives.

Turn Off Air Conditioners Below 55 Degrees

Turn off individual AC units when the outside temperature is below 55 degrees.  Night time lows have been below 55 degrees so it's important to turn the units off before you go to sleep.  In these colder temperatures, the units literally freeze up, and damage can result.  Individual AC units are in the following locations:

  • Student room air conditioners
         Crawford A, B, and D
         McElroy H
         Preska I
  • Floor lounge and kitchen air conditioners
         Crawford A, B, C, and D
         McElroy E, F, G, and H
         Preska I
