November 21, 2013 Special Edition - Thanksgiving Break and Holiday Decorating

Thanksgiving Break Housing - Deadline to Sign Up: Friday, November 22

  • The halls will be locked: 7:00 p.m.  Wednesday, November 27, 2013
  • The halls will open at noon Sunday, December 1, 2013. 

    Food service ends on November 27 at 6:00 p.m. and begins again at 4:00 p.m. on December 1 for the evening meal.

Before You Leave for Thanksgiving Break:

1. CLOSE and LOCK your windows.
2. Remove all room trash.
3. Return all To-Go Meal containers to the Carkoski Dining Hall.
4. Turn off the alarm on your clock.
5. Close blinds if on the first floor.
6. Turn off and un-plug your computer and electronics.
7. Turn off the lights.
8. CLOSE and LOCK your room door.

A staff member will be checking your room on Wednesday to help secure the building.  If policy violations are observed while staff are securing the building, staff will document the violation and will follow up when the resident returns.  


Register at your community front desk by Friday, November 22.  There is no charge to stay on-campus during Thanksgiving Break.

Holiday Decoration Guidelines


All artificial trees, holiday lights, and decorations must be removed from public areas prior to the beginning of Winter Break.




Decorations -  Decorations may cover up to 20 percent of the exterior surface of a student’s room door.

  • No candles or devices with an open flame.
  • Decorations must be made of materials that are fire-retardant or flame-proof.
  • Student room doors and community lounges may decorated; No decorations may be hung in the hallways.

Lights - Holiday lights, including rope lights, may be displayed in student rooms and community lounges.

  • Underwriter’s Laboratory (UL) label must be on the lights.
  • Do not place lights on metal door and window frames, as well as metal bed springs and lofts. 
  • Plug lights into a three-wire plug power strip.
  • Unplug holiday lights whenever a room is unoccupied.

Trees - Artificial holiday trees and greens may be placed in student rooms and community lounges.
Menorahs - Electric menorahs may be placed in student rooms and community lounges.

Sign Up for Winter Break


The communities close for Winter Break at 7:00 p.m. Friday, December 13.  The communities reopen at 8:00 a.m. Friday, January 10.





  • Residents of Crawford, McElroy, Preska, and Julia Sears:
     - Register in the Residential Life office between Monday, November 11 and
       Friday, December 6: $325. 
     - Those who register after December 6 pay $375.
  • Residents of Stadium Heights:
     - Register in the Residential Life office between Monday, November 11 and
       Friday, December 6: $0 (The Winter Break fee has already been included in the Stadium 
       Heights apartment rate, so there is no additional charge to stay.)
     - Those who register after December 6 pay $50.

Graduating or Leaving Campus for Any Reason After Fall Semester?

  • Complete and turn in a Contract Release Request form (and $30 fee) to the Residential Life office no later than 4:30 p.m. Monday, December 2. 
  • Requests after December 2 are subject to an additional $20 administrative charge.

Want to Change Your Room for Spring Semester?

  • Submit a request to the front desk of your community by noon Friday, December 6. 
  • Once accepted, moves must be completed by 7:00 p.m. Friday, December 13. 
  • Room change opportunities resume Monday, January 27. 


$1,000 Chester and Helen Carkoski Scholarships - Application Deadline: Monday, December 2

  • Two $1,000 Chester and Helen Carkoski Scholarship Awards to be granted in January.
  • Recognizes residence community student leaders with a good academic record and who have demonstrated volunteer leadership and service in the residence communities.

Last Chance to Convert Meals To Flex Dollars!

  • Maverick 160 meal plan holders may convert any of the 160 meals a semester into Flex Dollars at a rate of $5.25 per meal
  • Two conversions allowed per semester (by November 30 for fall semester). 
  • Stop by the Residential Life office at 111 Carkoski Commons or Convert Meals to Flex Dollars online.


Your Campus Username Will Change on December 19 


Your StarID will take the place of your current username beginning December 19. Following the conversion, you will use your StarID to log into services that currently request your username.




1.  Before December 19, activate your StarID.  You will need your TechID and social security number to activate your StarID, or you can submit the personal email address you have on file at the University to receive a verification code.

2.  Click on and follow the instructions on the page.  Set or change your StarID password to one you have NEVER used before.

3.  Change your CAMPUS login password ( to match your new StarID password. This will make the transition smoother for you.

You can also receive StarID SMS Text Reminders by texting "STARID" TO 69310. (Standard text messaging rates may apply.)

On December 19 at 1:00 a.m., ITS will automatically convert your username to your StarID. Some settings on mobile devices (phones, tablets, laptops, etc.) will likely need to be reconfigured.  These include MavNET Wireless, ResNet (residence community wireless), your email client (if you use one), MavPRINT, and others.  Visit for more information about how to reconfigure applications on your devices.
