Rummy

The "Rummy Macias Wrestling Complex" was dedicated on Saturday, October 13, 2001.

The facility is located in the lower level on the South side of Taylor Center. The Rummy Macia Wrestling Complex includes a 4,000 square-foot wrestling room with an adjoining training center designed for improving the strength and conditioning of Maverick wrestlers. Included in the complex are Stairmasters, exercise bikes, weight and strength equipment, and Adam Takedown Machine and a state-of-the-art sound system.

The room is named in of honor of former longtime MSU wrestling coach Rummy Macias. Macias inaugurated the MSU wrestling program in 1950 and coached for 38 years. The Davenport, Iowa native led MSU to three national titles (NAIA championships in 1958 and 1959 and a NCAA College Division title in 1965), eight Northern Intercollegiate Conference championships, and one North Central Conference title. He had 93 of his wrestlers attain all-America status, 19 were national individual champions, 62 captured NIC individual championships and 12 won NCC individual titles. He also served two stints as MSU's golf coach (four NCCC team titles and one NIC title, two-time NCC Golf Coach of the Year) and was an assistant coach with the MSU football program. The 1948 Univeristy of Iowa graduate has been inducted into seven Halls of Fame: MSU, NCC , NIC, NAIA , Amateur Wrestling, Minnesota Wrestling Coaches and the NCAA Division II Wrestling Association. Rummy lives in Singer Island with his wife, Ruth, and is still involved with wrestling as he serves as the coach at Cardinal Newman High School.
