What and How

The Minnesota State system that governs all Minnesota state universities requires its students to be covered by international insurance during participation in any and all education abroad and away programs.  This includes Faculty-led, Exchange and Education Abroad Company Partner programs.

Faculty-led Programs: All participants, both students and faculty, will be automatically enrolled in Minnesota State's chosen international insurance program HTH Worldwide Insurance.  The cost of this insurance for a 2-week program is $24.16 (2016 pricing), and is already built into the total program fee students must pay to MSU prior to departing the U.S.  The Center for Education Abroad and Away will place the HTH Insurance order for the entire group no less than 2 weeks prior to departure.  Within 48-hours after the order is placed, you will receive an email from HTH Insurance that will contain instructions on how to of your insurance card for you to print your insurance card, cut out, fold, and carry it with you throughout the duration of your overseas program.  The HTH Insurance email will also contain information on how you can set up your own lifetime account through the HTH website including health and medical information specific to your chosen country, local prescription drug brands, and medical/health phrases in Spanish.  Please see below for more information on the incredible benefits to which account holders have access.

Spanish Language Abroad Programs - Costa Rica and Ecuador: The MSU CEAA will order HTH Worldwide Insurance coverage for you.  4 weeks of coverage is $46.90*; 8 weeks is $93.80*; 12 weeks is $140.70*; 16 weeks is $187.60* (*2016 pricing), the cost of which will be charged to your eServices account once the order has been placed (no less than one month prior to departure).  Within 48-hours after the order is placed, you will receive an email from HTH Insurance that will contain instructions on how to print your insurance card, cut out, fold, and carry it with you throughout the duration of your overseas program.  The HTH Insurance email will also contain information on how you can set up your own lifetime account through the HTH website including health and medical information specific to your chosen country, local prescription drug brands, and medical/health phrases in Spanish.  Please see below for more information on the incredible benefits to which account holders have access.

Spanish Language Abroad Programs - all Spain locations:  Coverage in Spain's national insurance program is included in the program fee you pay to MSU for your Estudio Sampere program costs.  However, Spain's national insurance program covers you in Spain only.  To ensure more comprehensive coverage, you are required to order an International Student Identity Card (ISIC).  The cost is $25, and the card can be ordered through the ISIC website.  More details about the ISIC can be found at the bottom of the page.

Education Abroad and Away Company Partner Programs: International insurance coverage is almost always included in the program fee students pay directly to their chosen education abroad and away company.  Therefore, your chosen education abroad company will provide you with the appropriate international insurance coverage.  If you have questions about insurance, please email or call your education abroad and away company advisor or program manager.

Exchange Programs: Insurance coverage comes in many different ways through exchange programs and is heavily influenced by the host country's requirements for student insurance coverage.  Please refer to the list below to learn more about the student insurance requirements for the country in which you have chosen to study:

HTH Worldwide Health and Accident Insurance

The Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system (Minnesota State) has contracted with HTH Worldwide Insurance to provide affordable and comprehensive health and accident insurance for students on MSU education abroad and away programs. Information on coverage can be downloaded [PDF] here (274 KiB).  Each student for whom HTH Insurance is ordered will receive access to a lifetime account with HTH that includes information on in-network doctors, clinics and hospitals worldwide that will bill HTH directly for your health care costs!  Your account also gives you access to the different brand names for your prescriptions in countries around the world, medical terms and phrases in more than a dozen languages (including pronounciation recordings!), real-time health and safety information for the country to which you are traveling and more!  Think your HTH insurance will cover only your immediate overseas health and medical costs?  Wrong!  For example, if you come down with appendicitus while abroad and have to have surgery to have your appendix removed, HTH will cover the costs for one of your parents to fly over to be with you during the surgery and recovery.  You'll find many such gems as part of your HTH coverage, but it's important for you to familiarze yourself with your HTH plan so you don't miss out on any of its benefits.

ISIC - International Student Identity Card

The ISIC is an internationally recognized form of student ID.  In certain regions of the world it can be used to obtain student discounts on things such as museum entrance fees, youth hostels, travel and more.  The ISIC now also comes with a pre-loaded credit card option.  However the main reason our office utilizes the ISIC for students participating on certain programs is because the ISIC also provides a wide range of insurance coverage, including travel insurance for minor incidents such as lost luggage, to major incidents such as evacuation due to natural disaster or political unrest.  It is important to note that ISIC does not provide real-time payment for medical treatment.  The user will initially have to pay for medical treatment with their own personal funds (usually by credit card), and then submit a reimbursement claim to April Travel Protection, the company that provides the ISIC insurance.  Click on the following embedded links to learn more about ISIC benefits and insurance coverage.
