Position Overview

During the academic year, the Program Advisor serves as the professional advisor to Residence Hall Association and the Maverick Chapter of National Residence Hall Honorary.

During the summer months, this position takes on an administrative role in overseeing conferences and camps, including supervision of the Summer Conference Staff.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership in the advising of all aspects of the Residence Hall Association and the National Residence Hall Honorary, in addition to providing on-going training to Residential Life staff in their work with community councils.
  • Create and support intentionally structured residence hall leadership development activities, including leadership workshops/experiences and a student leadership conference.
  • Serve as a connection to Minnesota State Student Government and Student Activities, and coordinate RHA representation at department and university functions.
  • Manage all aspects of the Residential Life summer conference, guest housing, and preseason housing program in collaboration with other departments within the Division of Student Affairs and the University and serves as liaison with all conference groups.

  • Excellent communication skills including verbal, written, and interpersonal.

  • Excellent administrative skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse working and learning environment.
  • Demonstrated skill in developing and implementing summer conference programs.

The Program Advisor and Summer Operations Coordinator position is classified as "Range B" non-exempt position with a typical minimum salary of $40,402 based on experience. Additionally, the Program Advisor receives $50 for each 24-hour duty shift as a part of the professional staff rotation during the summer conference season.

Currently, ASF members shall be entitled to enrollment, on a space available basis, in courses at any Minnesota State state university without payment of tuition or fees, except laboratory fees and special course fees. Such enrollment shall not exceed twenty-seven (27) semester credit hours per fiscal year. For purposes of this section, a year begins the first day of fall semester and concludes the day before the beginning of the succeeding fall semester. The ASF member's spouse or dependent children shall be eligible to share this right within the limits established above, with waiver of tuition only. Eligible dependent is defined as a child (biological, adopted, step-child, or legal ward) of up the twenty-five (25) years of age.

ASF members currently receive a professional development allocation each year. During 2022-2023 members received $1,025.

All of our apartments for live-in/on professional staff have been fully renovated or are new construction. You will find them comfortable and inviting, with furnishings, wireless internet, laundry, and adequate storage space. The apartments come in a variety of shapes and sizes, with a variety of amenities. We expect our live-in/on staff to adhere to University policies regarding smoking.

The Program Advisor carries out a vision of leadership development by coordinating developmental initiatives with our emerging Residential Life student leaders. The Leadership Kickoff each September helps kick-start the Community Council program; an initiative that impacts every floor Community Council throughout campus.

The Leadership workshops/experiences are another component of the Program Advisor's role that has an important place in our department's leadership development efforts.  The impact of these strategies, which is facilitated by the Program Advisor and a Hall Director, positively impacts our student leaders at many levels including Community Council leaders, RHA leaders, NRHH leaders, and those emerging leaders who aspire to become a Community Advisor in the future.
