Danielle ZimmermannCarley HeckmannMankato, Minn. - Leaving home? No problem. Coming to a brand new place? No problem. Meeting people?

No problem. These are all situations freshmen Danielle Zimmermann and Carley Heckmann dealt with when they came to MSU. How did they handle it? No problem. Danielle and Carley are two freshmen that are not afraid of a challenge. Both came to MSU without knowing what to expect, but getting to the campus three weeks early for volleyball was key for their transition.

“By the time actual college came around I had made 15 friends in those three weeks and they've become 15 sisters,” Danielle said. “For me the best way to adapt was to keep myself busy.”

I Double Dog Dare You

By Dax Larson

4/10/06

Carley HeckmannMankato, Minn. – Spring volleyball is about learning, growing and improving as a volleyball player. Freshmen Carley Heckmann is doing all the above. Carley has made a position change this spring, but she is taking every opportunity to learn and she is doing it with a positive attitude

“She has an incredibly optimistic attitude,” head coach Dennis “Aame” Amundson said. “She never takes the game personal and good things happen when she is around. All teams need a person with a winning attitude like that.”

Carley’s great attitude is shown through her nickname, “Double Dawg”. Carley got this nickname from the phrase, “I double dog dare you”. The story behind this name stems from when Carley was in high school. She played the Marshall Tigers in a high school tournament and lost by a close margin...

Learning from the Best

By Dax Larson

Danielle ZimmermannMankato, Minn. – It’s always nice to have someone to look up to, someone to strive to be like. In sports, this person is usually a professional that we see on television. For freshman Danielle Zimmermann it wasn’t someone she saw on TV or someone she will never meet. It was a good-hearted, hard-working senior in the same program she was in. For Danielle, senior

Tiffany “Tiff” Graham was all she needed.

“Tiffany has been a great role model for me,” Danielle said. “I've made it one of my goals to "go out" with the same respect she has earned as an athlete and a person.”

After living with Tiff during the preseason, Danielle started to write things down about Tiff throughout the season. Everyday Danielle would write something about things she learned about Tiff as a person, skills of the game, loving the game, and things more important than the game. Tiff helped Danielle ease into college life and collegiate volleyball.

“(Playing for UW-Green Bay) was an experience,” Cathy said. “I had a chance to grow up a lot while I was there.”

Cathy made her Maverick debut Saturday in St. Cloud. In her first weekend she hit .300. Head coach Dennis “Aame” Amundson isn’t sure where to put the six foot freshman as she played all three front row positions in her first four matches as a Maverick.
