School is back in session and the coaches say all their players are on campus.

Comments from the Coaches

I asked the coaches if they rested up over the summer months, spent time with their family and friends while polishing their golf game.

Coach Margenthaler laughed and said that June and July are critical months for the men’s basketball program. This is the time to evaluate talent at all-star games, AAU tournaments and national championships. He traveled not only to Minneapolis but also to New York, Milwaukee, Kansas City, Chicago, Kearney (NE) and Orlando. He also sent assistant coach Schott to Las Vegas and graduate assistant Larson to a junior college event in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Coach Walker said that she played a little golf over the summer but she also attended many games and tournaments to look for future Mavs. She scouted several tournaments in the Twin Cities, the Great Lakes Shootout in Menomonie, WI and a regional tournament in Kearney, NE. She scouted the top 200 young ladies in Minnesota at the MN Elite Camp at Bethel College. Her most important tourney was the national 16 & under AAU tournament in Dallas, TX. With five seniors on the team, Coach Walker is evaluating a lot of future talent.

Mavs/Gophers Basketball Game

The November 8th scrimmage between the Mavericks and Gopher men’s basketball teams is the first ever encounter between these two programs. Because of this special event, we are working with KTOE to charter a fan bus to the game. We are also in the early stages of arranging a pre-game rally for fans and alumni. The rally will be held at a facility near Williams Arena. More details when they become available.

Midnight Madness

Mark down Monday night, October 14th at midnight. The unveiling of the 2002-03 basketball teams will take place at that time. In addition to a 15-minute scrimmage, there will be a men’s slam-dunk contest and a women’s three-point contest.

Membership Renewal

This year Hoops Club members will be listed in the 2002-03 basketball game program. Get your renewals in right away.
