Anderson, Staten lead Mavs to win

MARSHALL — Minnesota State made 34 of 41 free throws, including 11 of 12 in the final minute, to defeat 16th-ranked Northern State 96-86 at the Southwest Minnesota State/U.S. Bancorp Classic men's basketball tournament Saturday.

Jamel Staten led the Mavericks with 25 points and nine rebounds, but he fouled out with 1:10 to play. The Mavericks made their final 11 points from the line, including 6 of 6 by Andy Moeller, who finished with 18 points and five assists.

Joe Williams made 3 of 4 free throws in the final minute, missing once with just three seconds to play, and Gameli Ahelegbe hit both of his free throws at the end.

Luke Anderson scored 20 points, making 4 of 6 from 3-point range.

The Mavericks had a 38-25 rebounding advantage against the taller Northern State team. However, the Mavericks committed 18 turnovers.

Both teams were called for 28 fouls, with State, Chris Whitfield and Drew Shepp each fouling out.

Aaron Busack led Northern State (5-1) with 30 points, making 14 of 18 free throws. Northern State was 29 of 38 at the free-throw line.

The Mavericks (5-0) return home for a nonconference game Tuesday against Dakota Wesleyan at 7 p.m.
